Life with diabetes has its challenges. Having a family or others around you that are a source of support and encouragement makes it easier to shoulder the load at times. For me, the closeness of family also makes it difficult. As Angie says,"...I hate that they have to witness their father in such a vulnerable, bizarre state"...I hate having them have to see me like that. That part of diabetes serves to remind me that I am extremely vulnerable and I am not invincible.
The events discussed here happened so quickly that it is hard to remember exactly what happened. If I could put into words the feelings and thoughts going thru my head while this was happening, you'd think I was using some type of wild drug. The "out of body" experiences I've had with hypoglycemia are interesting. I wish I could get those that have never experienced such events to feel what it is like. At times, it's pure craziness. You could even say, that at other times, it is inspirational. I do find it interesting that the times I have had the most severe hypoglycemic events seem to correspond to times of my being tired or exhausted. Not always physical exhaustion but perhaps times of mental exhaustion. I understand and recognize the dangers associated with tight blood sugar control and have tried to allow my sugars to be slightly higher to lower the risk for these events. I don't ever pretend to not have diabetes but I like feeling in control. WIth diabetes, sometimes, we have no control..."this is life". We can't control everything. But, what we can do is to continue to learn from the events. Jonathan and Bayleigh have had to learn about diabetes and problems associated with the disease. They must recognize that you must stay vigiliant and always prepared to act. Makes you realize that our bodies are an amazingly complex machine. Take responsibility to protect your body. Do what you need to do to make that happen.....It's Your Health. It's Your Life. Make That Change! ~John
